There is a piece of good news! Business in Thailand including manufacturers and importers will have an additional six months to plan for the new rules, taking effect from July 20, 2021.
The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) has postponed a requirement. The requirement includes QR codes as well next to the Thailand Industrial Standards (TIS) logo that links to licensing details. TISI has decided to extend the implementation date by six months. It is due to complications surrounding product labelling and the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, it was originally expected to take effect on January 21, 2021.
Before import or domestic production, Thailand’s Ministry of Industry (MOI) demands that various manufactured products meet Thailand’s industrial requirements. You must know that these products include gas water heaters, fans, light bulbs, rice cookers, fuel oils, toys, and so on.
New Labelling Regulations
The Industrial Product Standards Act (No. 6) B.E. 2548 (2005) regulates product qualities. Verticals like design, form, manufacturing procedure, reliability, protection, and packaging are the major lookout in the segment. TISI operating as a part of the MOI has set down and in charge of supervision of these standards.
Surprisingly, the TIS logo was falsely discovered on many items. This indicated the use of a logo without testing or approval of TISI. In July 2020, MOI released the Regulation named Format and Methods to Label and Use Markings on Industrial Products B.E. 2563 (2020). Its purpose was to address this deceptive use of the TIS logo. The display of a QR code linking to the TISI license details is mandatory for various household appliances and other licensed goods.
With the regulation’s postponement, all affected companies should take advantage of the extra time to review their labelling standards. They have to make required arrangements in advance of the new implementation date, that is, July 20, 2021. Eventually, this is to ensure that the product labels comply with the ministerial regulation’s requirements.
Your Take!
The extension is applicable for all types of companies in Thailand with packaging requirements for the conveyance of their business. But before packaging and labelling, the trademark application for your brand is very important.
It is great that the MOI extended the date of filing of product labelling applications. But on the other hand, it is going to be very strict this time about the authenticity of the same. The announcement enforcing the integration of QR Codes with labels is an indication of this fact.
