Trademark
- Provides protection for service marks, certification marks, and collective marks;
- The owner of the registered trademark owner has the right to its use to the items for which the trademark was granted;
- The trademark will be valid for 10 years right from the date of filing;
- For renewal an application needs to be filed with 90 days before the expiry date;
Copyright
- Protected under the Copyright Act 1994;
- Copyright protection includes literary works such as dramatic, musical, cinematographic works, audio-visual, computer programs, and sound and video broadcasting;
- The owner holds the exclusive right to use the copyrighted work;
- Generally, copyright is protected for the creator’s life along with an additional period of 50 years;
- The amended Copyright of 2015 includes a new section on the punitive damage while amending sections on the destruction of counterfeits and seizure;
Patent
- Patent Act 1979 gives protection to inventions and industrial designs;
- To be eligible, an invention must involve an inventive step, be novel, and capable of industrial application;
- For invention, it is valid for 20 years and for industrial design it is valid for 10 years;
- The patentee will have exclusive right to produce, use, sell, and import the products;
