Simply urban! Just like I have imagined always; ubiquitous skyscrapers in a perfect grid pattern, moving cars, people, buses, trains, and tuktuks, forming the organic part of the city; the part that decides the character and the structures. What doesn’t it have, from theatres, malls, muay-Thai rinks, restaurants, and parks to spa centers; everything that will keep you entertained. While you walk down the road you will see every other person carrying a cup or a juice, maybe. Back then I wished not to see so many people around, but trust that’s the last thing on earth you would want to be granted. That’s the flavor of the city and you can’t really ignore it. The nights are quieter, safer, but have their way of keeping you busy. Bangkok, it is!
After so many years in Bangkok, it seems like the city has accepted me in a way no other person has. As if the city sees, hears and feels me in every moment of my life. And let me tell you my story is similar to so many other foreigners like me residing in Thailand. The best part about the country is it welcomes everyone with open arms.
Cost of Living
Living costs in Thailand are quite low. Packaged food products, consumer staples like bread, meat and eggs and fruits and vegetables are available almost everywhere and are inexpensive. In fact, grocery stores in the country are ample overflowing with exotic ingredients. It’s true that Thais mostly prefer eating outside, but expats need not worry as they will be able to dine well at an affordable price.
Other living expenses like household cleaning products as well as personal hygiene products are quite inexpensive in Thailand, provided you look for the local brands. As for public transportation, it is available everywhere. Bangkok has a mass-transit rail system and a public bus system.
Health Care Facility
You can find some first-rate doctors and an incredibly good health care system. Sure, quality care can be availed throughout the country; however, the bigger cities come with the best. They have world-class facilities and state-of-the-art medical tools. Consultation with a general practitioner would cost you somewhere within $20, whereas a dental filling may cost you lesser than $30. Also, affordable health insurance policies are there to support those expats who choose to pay out of their pocket for the sake of health.
Housing
The cost of housing varies based on the area you want to settle. According to a recent report it is found that most people prefer settling in Bangkok. But then yes, housing in Bangkok can be little heavy on your pocket. However, if you are considering the availability of amenities there, the cost would be nothing. The second best place to stay would be Chiang Mai, where you can expect to get well-furnished rooms at a competitive price. Anyone who is planning to stay on the outskirts of the central districts they will need to pay much lesser for the same.
