Will you be in Bangkok during Songkran? Great, wondering what to do? Well, let me tell you Songkran is not only about water fight, there’s a lot to it. Only those who have visited will know. To be able to explore every color of the festival without missing out on anything, it’s important to do some research. And here’s a guide to Songkran.
1. Participate in a Festival that’s Hardly Advertised
The first thing that comes to mind when we hear “Songkran” is water. Of course, that’s one of the parts of the festival, but that’s not all. The cultural function involves so much more. On Songkran, head to a temple to participate in the purification ceremony, provided you have a Thai relative or a friend in the province. Then again, you can always be a spectator of the entire show. Once you visit a temple, you will see the locals pouring water on images of Buddha and on the hands of the monk as a sign of respect.
2. Get Straight to the Water Play
Hit the streets for water play with the locals. The restaurants, shop owners and hotel staff usually setup watering stations with buckets full of icy water at the street side to splash people as they walk by.
To have the ultimate experience you must surely try visiting places like Sukhumvit, Silom, RCA and Khao San. You can also look at the options like Thonburi ad Bang Krachao. These two are a little less crowded. Besides, you can have more local experience.
3. Join a Pool Party
Hotels in Bangkok get geared up with wild pool parties. The fun here is completely different than what you find on the street. Pool parties are full of good music, BBQ food and lots of lots of drinks. If pool parties are totally your kind of scene, check out the hotels online. You can even get some good offers or discounts.
4. Attend Songkran Music Festival
Songkran S20 Music Festival is one happening event. This is a continuous 3-day event, featuring some of the biggest international DJs, like Afrojack, Nicky Romero and much more. You will surely have a blast, dancing all night to the beats while getting showered with water.
5. There are Dry Parties, too. Try Them
There are people, both locals and foreigners who do not like getting wet. So, they arrange for their dry events. However, that doesn’t mean they are less fun.
